Since the first edition of this book appeared in 1941, many branches of structural geology have been the subject of important new researches, and in particular, theories of folding and faulting and of the origin of major morpho-tietonic features of the globe, have been freely developed. To maintain a consistent presentation of principles, and at the same time to treat the subject in a progressive style, has required complete revision of large sections of the book, which has also been enlarged.
