A history of the Hayle Railway is long overdue; indeed one was promised over 60 years ago. The Hayle
Railway is a key part of Cornwall’s railway history, dating from 1834, but has for too long been regarded
as merely a precursor to the West Cornwall and Great Western Railways. Roger Langley has now made
good that omission with a full treatment of the line up to its absorption by surrogates of the GWR in 1866.
He also uncovers the influence over the railway by several major mines. Local authors David Birch and
John Gabb have also contributed a valuable gazetteer of what remains of the railway on the ground.
